Ende 2001 beendeten The Cure mit der Veröffentlichung von "Greatest Hits" den Plattenvertrag mit Fiction/Polydor. Die Platte stellte nach Aussagen Smiths einen Kompromiss dar, da die Plattenfirma früher oder später auch ohne Einverständnis der Band eine Zusammenstellung ihrer größten Hits herausgebracht hätte.
