The amazing thing about Johannesburg ist that less than a hundred years ago, the land on which it now stands was bleak, barren veld, There was not one of the usual geographical features - a large river, a sheltering mountain or a sea port - to form the basis for the foundation of a city. The area was desolate, windswept and sparsely inhabited by a few impoverished farmes who, because of the rocky nature of the ground, did very little in the cultivating of the land; instead they grazed small numers of goats, sheep an dcattle on the harsh landscape - the more ambitious agricultural farming was done in the lush lowveld in the eastern and northern parts of the Transvaal.
