The 6th Airborne Division
was originally formed in April of 1943 to increase their strength in
airborne assault capabilities. Like other British Airborne divisions
the 6th adopted the red beret and the name Red Devils. Elements of the
6th Division first saw action on D-Day, June 6th, 1944 and the 5th
Parachute Brigade was given the vital task of capturing, intact and
holding, the Benouville and Ranville bridges. Following their
successful baptism of fire, the 6th then served in numerous other
European operations.
