Story: During the Ming Dynasty one of the royal guards Feng San brutally rapes and murders one of the princesses. The emperor gives another chance to Feng Sau the royal guard that let the criminal escape. Feng Sau chases Feng San to a mystical spinning Buddha wheel, after attempting a ritual they both end up 300 years into the future.
Review: Iceman Cometh is a Kung Fu that mixes old style mystical kung fu with a modern day setting. Yuen Biao is also the lead role and this movie is also one of his best movie of the 80`s. Using a time travel setting the story ended up pretty interesting. This is one of the few movies with ancient kung fu warriors in a modern day setting. The story is very simple to follow but unfortunately holds only a few surprises.
The movie has 3 main characters, one of them being the villain but most of the attention is focused on Feng Sau (Yuen Biao). All of the actors give a good performance, both with martial arts skills or humor. There is very little background or development to the characters except for maybe Feng Sau.
You have a couple of very interesting action sequences in this movie, the ancient china part at the beginning of the movie is pretty action packed. The movie start on a very high action level, with a very good swordplay fight with Biao VS Wah. After that point this become shift to a more humorist setting as you have Feng Sau adapting to the modern world, there are a couple of hilarious gags with that. The movie starts to drag on a bit when the modern day jokes start to become old, during the second half of the movie the villain returns and the action picks up with some spectacular stunt, some good car chase scenes and great gun play fights. The last fight that last some 10 to 15 minutes, is incredible. The choreography is amaze and the moves both actors pull off are simply incredible.
The subtitles are very good and the dialog is pretty easy to follow. This is probably one of the best old 80´s setting movies we´ve seen, we aren´t crazy about the Hong Kong 80´s setting because it seems cheesy in most movies. This movie is not bad, some pretty incredible action and some comedy but we did find it a little long in the middle. We recommend this movie to kung fu fans and Yuen Biao fans.
The image (LTB) quality is great, sharp but with some scratches at the beginning of the movie, its not very apparent during the whole movie. You also have a good 5.1 Surround Sound, as for the extra, you only have Chapter selection and Stars Files. The DVD is great so if you want to upgrade your old VHS copy of this great movie, the DVD version is a good choice. |
